Kanda Pohe


Kanda pohe is a Maharashtrian breakfast dish. Kanda is onion and pohe is flattened rice or rice flakes in Marathi. It is a dish prepared in almost every household for breakfast or for evening tea time snacks. Soaked pohe are added to stir fried onion and peanuts, garnished with coconut and coriander leaves and served with a lemon wedge.

In Maharashtra, it is customary for a girl to preapre and serve Kanda pohe to the family visiting her house for a marriage proposal. How interesting! the decision would be based on Kanada pohe....

Here goes the recipe for this simple dish.

Measurement: 1 Cup = 180 ml
Serves: 3

Ingredients:
  1. Onion (chopped) - 2 medium
  2. Poha (Rice flakes) - 3 1/2 cups
  3. Green chillies (chopped) - 2 to 3
  4. Soaked peanuts  - 2 tbsp
  5. Curry leaves - 5 to 6
  6. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  7. Cumin powder - 1/4 tsp
  8. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  9. Scrapped coconut - 2 tbsp
  10. Coriander leaves (chopped) - 1 tbsp
  11. Oil -  4 tbsp
  12. Sugar - a pinch
  13. Salt to taste
  14. Lemon wedges for serving
Procedure:
  • Heat oil in a wok and add mustard seeds.
  • Add curry leaves and onion, stir fry for half a minute.
  • Add peanuts and stir fry.
  • Sprinkle little salt and cook it covered on low flame till onion turn soft (for 4-5 minutes).
  • In the meanwhile, wash poha and drain.
  • Sprinkle turmeric powder, cumin powder, sugar and salt over poha; mix well.
  • Add green chillies to onion and stir fry for half a minute.
  • Add poha and mix well.
  • Keep it covered on low flame for 2 min.
  • Garnish with scrapped coconut and coriander.
  • Serve hot accompanied by a lemon wedge.
  • Tip:
  • You may stir fry potato as well along with onion.
  • Fresh peas also can be added, but avoid peanuts then.
